"The Mud Stops Here" - Home Decor Vinyl Project

Hi everyone, Michelle here from Lady of Leisure Ink.  Today I have quite a simple project using some good old vinyl I just happened to have laying around (actually I have a whole drawer full of the stuff, but don't tell anyone.)

A little background to this project first.  I am in the process of having my kitchen remodeled, I mean BIG TIME - wall coming down, new cabinets, etc.  When it's all finished and my hardwood floors have been redone I want to 'encourage' everyone to remove their shoes before entering.  I sometimes find it difficult to ask (and so does my husband), so I thought I'd make a fun sign to hang by the door for all to see.

First I took a plain canvas (this is 11" x 14") I got it from Hobby Lobby when it was on sale.

Then I took some acrylic paint (Plaid - Antique White) and gave it a couple of coats.

While it was drying I turned to my Silhouette Cameo, grabbed my brown vinyl and set about creating.  The file I used is from the Silhouette online store - "The Mud Stops Here".  I decided to add the line underneath "Please take off your shoes." - the font I used for this was 'Georgia'.

I used the cut setting which are pre-selected for vinyl on the Silhouette Designer software.  The only change I made it that I upped the blade depth from 1 to 2 (I have been using this same blade since before Christmas.)  Once the vinyl was cut I used contact paper as 'transfer tape'.  Contact paper is quite sticky, so I rubbed it over my jeans a few times to take some of the tackiness off - I have heard that some people have also used Glad Press 'n' Seal for transfer tape.  Here is a look at the finished project.

I'm hoping this works, now if only I could make a sign for the back door saying "Wipe and dry your feet" that the dog would take note of!

Thank you once again Pam for letting me come and play.

Michelle
